Fearless Feminist Masked Avengers
The Guerrilla Girls are feminist masked avengers in the tradition of anonymous do-gooders like Robin Hood, Wonder Woman and Batman. They use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose sexism, racism and corruption in politics, art, film, and pop culture. The work of the Guerrilla Girls has been passed around the world by their tireless supporters. The Guerrilla Girls’ work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Bitch, Mother Jones and Artforum; on NPR, the BBC and CBC; and in many art and feminist texts. They are authors of stickers, billboards, many, many posters and other projects (including a large-scale installation for the 2005 Venice Biennale,) and several books including The Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art, Bitches, Bimbos and Ballbreakers: The Guerrilla Girls' Illustrated Guide to Female Stereotypes, and The Guerrilla Girls' Art Museum Activity Book. They undermine the idea of a mainstream narrative in visual culture by revealing the under-story, the subtext, the forgotten, the overlooked, the understated and the downright unfair.
In the last few years, the Guerrilla Girls have appeared at over 90 universities and museums around the world. They created a large-scale installation for the Venice Biennale, brainstormed with Greenpeace, and participated in Amnesty International's Stop Violence Against Women Campaign in the UK. In 2006, they unveiled their latest anti-film industry billboard in Hollywood just in time for the Oscars, and created large-scale projects for Istanbul and Mexico City. In 2007 they challenged the Museum of Modern Art at its own Feminist Futures Symposium, examined the museums of Washington DC in a full page in the Washington Post, and exhibited large-scale posters and banners in Athens and Bilbao. In 2008, they launched actions at the Bronx Museum, New York and the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA, Los Angeles.
What’s next? They could be anyone; they are everywhere.
For years the Guerrilla Girls have been stirring up audiences with their presentations and workshops in full jungle drag. The girls have appeared at schools, museums and organizations of all types, in almost every state in the U.S. and on almost every continent.
The performance lasts about an hour and a half, followed by a question period. They take the audience through how they came up with some of their many, many posters, books (Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls and The Guerrilla Girls Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art) and actions about discrimination in art, film, politics, etc. Founding member Frida Kahlo will talk about their work, their philosophy of activism, and their campaign against the appalling lack of ethics in the art world.
The Guerrilla Girls also conduct one-day workshops where they help students produce their own activist projects on issues that are important to them.
