One of the world’s foremost documentary filmmakers, Ron Mann’s personal and professional quest is to make marginal cultures visible and accessible. A chronicler of movements that are considered underground or subversive, his sympathies are always with the underdogs, the artists, and the radicals.

Grass, a devastating and hilarious critique of how marijuana became the object of a billion dollar eradication and punishment campaign by the US government, is one of his most popular films. Mann’s first documentary feature, Imagine the Sound, brings together, in interviews and performance, the prime innovators of the once-controversial free jazz movement of the 60's. His next film, Poetry in Motion, highlighted the emergence of spoken word as an art form a decade before rap and poetry slams became the rage. Comic Book Confidential explores the subject of comic books and the 1950s congressional hearings “proving” the links between comic books and juvenile delinquency. Twist shows the history of free form dancing, and the exploitation of Black artists by the pop-music industry.

Go Further explores the idea that the single individual is the key to large-scale transformational change. The film follows actor Woody Harrelson as he takes a small group of friends on a bio-fuelled bus-ride down the Pacific Coast Highway to show the people they encounter that there are viable alternatives to our habitual, environmentally-destructive behaviors. Mann's latest feature-length documentary Tales of the Rat Fink is about the artist Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, most famous for his futuristic car designs and a rebel rodent named “Rat Fink”.
