Fly, the seminal NYC punk squatter artist, presents a hands-on comics workshop. She will go over the steps in creating a “comix zine”. All aspects will be discussed in a fun and inclusive way, from developing ideas to doing thumbnails and page design to finished pencils and finally inking and final production. There will be a strong emphasis on creating a photocopied zine, and breaking the perception that you need to have fancy and expensive printing to make a good comic. The presentation includes a discussion of how Fly began to create comics, the creative process and how she uses the medium to reflect her life experiences.
Also, as a bonus, she presents her Comics Slide Show. You can see some of her classic pieces including:
9/11 – Fly’s personal experience of witnessing the attacks on the World Trade Center and dealing with the aftermath.
Eyeball House – A short story of a squat in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
K-9’s First Time Part 3: “the Boyfriend” – The story of a 9 year old girl who experiences sexual abuse
Me and Joey and Joe – A dream about Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer
Crazy Cat - a K-9 story about being a teenager with a schizophrenic parent
The workshop and presentation comes with handouts and other surprise goodies.
“Fly is an actual artist. That is, she takes the familiar and makes it new. She is not afraid to make you afraid. She knows that it’s her job to fuck with your mind. She is also the mythic iconographer of her culture, the anarchist East Village punks and squatters. Fly is the Botticelli of Bad-ass.” - John Perry Barlow
“The world of Fly, is one populated with the faces of humans who appear to believe that life has more potential than just consuming product, and creating garbage. Fly lives and draws as she believes, friends and fellow travelers sharing a meager existence on the road less traveled. The faces of this book, are real and true, and have the uncompromising dignity of people not for sale” - Sue Coe
