Timothy Speed Levitch is embarking on a journey and he’s coming to your town. Speed is the subject of the documentary film 'The Cruise' (1998), and has made a host of appearances in films like Waking Life, and School of Rock. He also appears regularly on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. His eclectic mix of historical tidbits, inspirational quotes, guidebook-like descriptions and humorous commentary have turned him into a folk hero for the Burning Man cadre. He has been described as a modern day Oscar Wilde complete with New York angst. He reminds us that we are on a collective journey undergoing constant metamorphosis, constantly on our own Cruise, participating as sentient creatures in what can only be described as the 'Ongoing Wow!'
Speed presents his own magic brand of spoken word and audience participatory interchange as he takes audiences into a journey that is different along each stop of the road. He is available for Television and Radio appearances, guided walking and bus tours, speaking engagements, and residencies.
Speedology: Speed Levitch on New York on Speed is, a guidebook of sorts that teaches one to learn how to learn from the city, a spiritualized text of sex, drugs and Rock and Roll. In Speed’s New York, readers experience the great city not only as a wondrous place but as a state of mind. Drawing on Buddhism, Baudelaire, Marshall McLuhan, and the Marx Brothers in an erudite, mind-bending journey through the streets of Manhattan, Speed offers the reader a portrait of humanity and a profound opportunity for self-understanding. This tour guide to life is the basis for the critically acclaimed Emmy Award-winning documentary The Cruise.
About Speed:
For the past several years Timothy Speed Levitch has achieved a loyal following and cult status as a tour guide of the most unusual sort. A playwright, performer and author, he brings alive eastern and western philosophies with a hard dose of pop culture and Renaissance Era flair. Richard Linklater describes Levitch as "The chiropractor of the brain". Others have called him a modern day Oscar Wilde, complete with New York angst. Working as a tour guide atop a double-decker bus in New York City in the 1990’s, Levitch’s magical performances to tourists were captured beautifully in the Emmy Award winning film The Cruise (1998, dir. Bennet Miller.) Levitch describes The Cruise as "an unintentional meditation and an elongated journey into our own lives. The Cruise is a gigantic adventure that leads back to ourselves, and that meaning is just a subsequent invention, a rivulet off the original river that is our learning process. We are all involved in a process and that process is about learning. I think the earth in the long run is a giant classroom."
Since The Cruise he has worked as a writer for VH-1's Pop Up Video , and has been a featured guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Levitch is featured as himself in the rotoscope classic Waking Life (2002, dir. Richard Linklater), as well as costarring with Andy Dick in Scotland, PA (2002). His current work includes collaborative musical projects with the group Weezer, and multiple appearances performing during the Lost Film Fest. Levitch constantly expands upon his role as narrator in order to help us gain new insight on the current Zeitgeist.
